The Westmores
George Westmore was a barber and wig maker who moved to
America at the beginning of the 1900’s in order to work on films in Hollywood.
Later on in his career he became a successful make-up artist and set up the
first film make-up department at Selig Studios. George’s Sons also worked in
Hollywood as make-up artists after being taught the trade by their father their
names were Montague, Perc, Ernest, Bud, Walter and Frank. All of Georges sons
worked in Hollywood for companies including Universal, Paramount and Warner Bros.
Montague worked on the 1939 film Gone With The Wind whilst he worked at David O’Selznick’s
film studios. Perc work for First National Pictures, Warner Brothers and
Universal film studios. Ernest worked for First National Pictures and then RKO
Pictures (Radio Keith Orpheum) where he worked on films such as Cimarron for
which he received an Oscar. He then went onto work for 20th Century
Fox. Ernest also worked as a make-up artist and supervisor for 20th
Century Fox. Bud worked in the make-up departments of Paramount, Universal and
20th Century Fox. Walter worked at Paramount studios for most of his
career as a make-up artist. Frank worked for Paramount and also wrote “The
Westmores of Hollywood” which was a book about the careers of the members in
his family. Montague’s sons named Monte Junior, Michael and Marvin also worked
in Hollywood as make-up artists as did two of his grandchildren Kandance and
Kevin. The Westmores have played such a big part in the development of make-up
for film that they have been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The
Westmores are regarded as the creators of make-up for film by many professionals
in Hollywood.
